Application for Winter 2010
Each semester the Department of Physics and Astronomy is able to fund a limited number of physics majors to work in research groups within the department. However, for Winter Semester 2010 the number of available hours looks to be much smaller than in the past, so plan for alternative funding options. The pay will be $10.25 per hour. For Winter Semester we are looking mostly to award RA funding for up to 10 hours per week. You may apply for up to 20 hours per week, but must STRONGLY justify this larger number of hours in your application. We have found in the past that students rarely manage 20 hours per week during the Fall and Winter Semesters. We also encourage students to consider working as teaching assistants. For RA funding, we give preference to students who have established a track record of working in a research group (if need be, as a volunteer in the beginning). We also give preference to students who have applied for an ORCA scholarship within the past year, so it is good to submit an ORCA application each Fall.
The primary purpose of this research support is to help students complete a senior thesis or capstone project. Please work on your thesis DURING the funded period. Make an outline of your thesis early. Produce graphs and figures for your thesis as you go. Acceptance of funding obligates students to present at the Annual College Spring Research Conference which is generally held in March each year.
Please discuss a specific research project with your advisor. Make sure you understand the details of your project since you will have to describe it on this application. We will notify you regarding funding decisions within a week of the application deadline. If you are not funded, please check with your advisor on possible alternative funding resources.
If you have any questions, please contact Eric G. Hintz, Undergraduate Research Coordinator.
